PINOY MATH WIZARDS TOP THE AMC 10/12

May 04, 2012

The Mathematical Association of America (MAA) released the results of the American Mathematics Competitions (AMC) 10/12 and revealed that six Filipino math whiz kids made it to the top, earning certificates of achievements.

No less than Prof. Steven R. Dunbar, AMC Director, in a letter to Dr. Simon Chua, extended his congratulations to the top-scoring Filipino students for their performance on the contest.

This year, three Pinoy mathletes raked up honors from AMC 10, that is, their scores had been between in the top 1% to 2.5%. Receiving the certificates of achievements were Jessamine Clariz Bunagan of St. Paul University-Philippines, Tuguegarao Gail Denise Destura of La Salle Academy, Kelsey Liom Tiong Soon of Grace Christian College.

The leading math aces who topped the AMC 12 were Sean Timothy Cheng and Deany Hendrick Cheng of Grace Christian College, John Thomas Chuatak of St. Stephen's High School.

The main purpose of the AMC 10/12 is to spur interest in mathematics and to develop talent through the excitement of solving challenging problems in a timed multiple-choice format. The problems range from the very easy to the extremely difficult. Moreover, students who participate in the AMC 10/12 should find that most of the problems are challenging but within their grasp. The contest is intended for everyone from the average student at a typical school who enjoys mathematics to the very best student at the most special school.
