Filipino math aces proved anew their number prowess as four from a close to two hundred participants from the Philippines were hailed for their better than best performance in the 2013 Pascal, Cayley and Fermat Contests given last February 2013.
Drawing more than 50, 000 participants from many countries and territories, the contests yielded perfect scorers and making it a short list with his 150 total marks was Christian Philip Gelera, an incoming grade 7 student of UP Integrated School. Gelera’s flawless result in the Pascal Contest earned him a medal for receiving two thumbs up from the Center for Education in Mathematics and Computing of the University of Waterloo in Canada.
Giving the Philippines equal mark of distinction were the medalists, Kelsey Lim Tiong Soon of Grace Christian College and Christopher Banzon of Makati Science High School who shared the same spot as this year’s top scorers of the 2013 Cayley Contest. Another medalist from Grace Christian College is John Wesley Chan who topped other Filipino participants in the 2013 Fermat Contest. The rest of the participants from the Philippines will receive certificates of distinction.
The medals for the top achievers of the Pascal, Cayley and Fermat contests will be conferred upon them during the closing program of the Mathematical Olympiad Summer Training (MOST) on May 16, 2013 at the Arellano University -Pasay.
The Pascal, Cayley and Fermat Contests are an opportunity for students to have fun and to develop their mathematical problem solving ability. The contests cover mathematical concepts found in curriculum common to all countries. Some questions were designed to test ingenuity and insight while most contest problems test logical thinking and problem solving.
