FILIPINOS GARNER 3 GOLD IN TOUGH 14TH CHINA NORTHERN MATHEMATICAL OLYMPIAD

Aug 01, 2018

Young Filipino mathematicians once again showed their mettle in the international arena as they achieved the Gold in one of the world's hardest math contests during the 14th China Northern Mathematical Olympiad (CNMO) held last June 19 to 25, 2018 in Taizhou, China.

Earning one gold medal apiece and bringing honor to their country were Grade 9 students Immanuel Josiah A. Balete(St. Stephen’s High School) and Bryce Ainsley A. Sanchez (Grace Christian College), and Grade 10 student Charles Justin G. Shi (Philippine Cultural College-Annex Campus).

The contestants had to solve 2 sets of exams, wherein each exam has 4 problems. They were given 3 hours to solve each part. The format is similar to all Mathematical Olympiads like the IMO.

Hosted by Taizhou High School (affiliated to Beijing Normal University), this year’s CNMO had around 300 participants from various provinces in the Northeastern part of China. Among the provinces that annually participate in this Olympiad are: Shijiazhuang, Gansu, Hubei, Chongqing, Shandong, Hebei, Shanxi and Shaanxi Provinces.

Team Leader for the Philippines was Hazel Joy Shi.
