Feb 13, 2018

The thirty-eight parent-child teams from regions in the Philippines wrapped their brains around the three-round math match during the 2nd MTG-SHARP-SM Family Math Quest held at Skydome, SM Mall North EDSA, Quezon City on February 11, 2018.

Mrs. Ma. Rheathia Perualila and her daughter Nijel Riz Perualila, a grade one pupil from Maasin Central Elementary School were declared the champion in the grade one category, winning Php5000.00 worth of gift certificate, a trophy, gold medals and some gift items.

The mom-daughter team from Iloilo City had not sailed through easily while maintaining their steady lead in each round since most parent participants come from math-related professions.

The other winners in the grade one category were 1st runner-up: mom Annabelle Doctolero and son Ace Christian Doctolero from BHC Educational Institute Inc., La Union; 2nd runner-up: dad Robert Uy and son Robert Henrik Uy from St. John’s Institute – Bacolod City; 3rd runner-up: dad Romeo Madrona Jr. and daughter Alexa Jodi Madrona from St. Francis of Assisi College, Cavite; and 4th runner-up: mom Suzette Lobo and daughter Hailie Lobo from Sto. Rosario Elementary School, Olongapo City.

On the other hand, dad Stephen Poh Leung and son Shaun Lawrence Poh Leung from St. Stephen’s High School bested 17 other teams in the grade 2 category. This dad-son team went home with a champion trophy, Php5000 worth of gift certificate, gold medals, and some gift items.

The following are the other winners in the grade 2 category of the 2018 Family Math Quest: 1st runner-up: dad Raymund Camacho and son Jan Rae Camacho from Kalalake Elementary School; 2nd runner-up: dad Elvin Marcelo and daughter Misha Elise Marcelo from Xavier School – Nuvali; mom Nora Caligtan and son Aron Marc Caligtan from Agoo Kiddie Special School, Biñan, Laguna; and mom Jeanie Que and daughter Alexis Jane Que from Iloilo Scholastic Academy, Iloilo City.

Associate Justice Jhosep Y. Lopez of the Court of Appeals, the day’s guest of honor lauded the MTG Philippines for holding this activity. Justice Lopez said that the Family Math Quest will shoot up children’s mathematics competence and strengthen their mathematics background because their presence in sitting side by side with their children will surely enhance the latter’s intrinsic motivation, increase their academic engagement, promote a deep sense of self-concept and self-efficacy.

This year’s Family Math Quest was made possible by the following sponsors: SM Mall North EDSA, The Skydome for the venue and other facilities, CW Home Depot for the Php5000 worth of gift certificate for the champion teams; Skyworth Travels and Tours for the AM snacks and lunch, SHARP Calculators for the medals and other gift items, Vital 1 Purified Drinking Water, Phoenix Publishing House, and JFC Publishing House.
