The Filipino math wizards bagged medals and awards in the 31st Asian Pacific Mathematics Olympiad (APMO) held on March 12, 2019.
Sean Anderson Ty from Zamboanga Chong Hua High School and Andres Rico Gonzales III from De La Salle University Integrated School gave a clean sweep of two silver medals for the country.
The Philippines also secured three bronze medals courtesy of Steven Reyes from St. Jude Catholic School, Julian Raymund Yu from British School of Manila and Immanuel Josiah Balete from St. Stephen’s High School.
Receiving honorable mention were Bryce Ainsley Sanchez, from Grace Christian College Dan Alden Baterisna from De La Salle University Integrated School, Dion Stephan Ong from Ateneo de Manila Senior High School, Vincent Dela Cruz from Valenzuela City School of Mathematics and Science, Ryan Mark Shao from Xavier School.
The aims of APMO are to:
- discover, encourage and challenge of mathematically gifted school students in all Pacific-Rim countries;
- foster of friendly international relations and cooperation between students and teachers in the Pacific-Rim Region; and
- create of an opportunity for the exchange of information on school syllabi and practice throughout the Pacific Region.
The APMO which started in 1989 is a regional mathematics competition which involves countries from the Asian Pacific region. This year, 349 students from 41 countries in the North and South Americas and in the Asian Pacific Rim participated in the APMO.
