MATH TEACHERS GIVE MTG-SPONSORED SEMINAR A THUMB-UP

Jun 21, 2007

The Mathematics Trainers’ Guild (MTG), Philippines received a very positive feedback in the seminar it conducted in three venues on different dates. The seminar with the theme, “Enhancing Competencies in Teaching Mathematics through Innovative Approaches” was held on June 14, 2007 at St. Jude Catholic School where about 150 participants from 45 schools in Metro Manila areas and some from Cebu City had attended. The same seminar was conducted in Colegio San Agustin-Bi?an on June 15, 2007 where 135 participants from Laguna Province and as far as Lucena City were in attendance and about 140 participants also attended in Tarlac Bayanihan Institute, Tarlac City on June 16, 2007.

Two of the world’s most renowned and respected mathematicians, Dr. Andy Liu of the Mathematical and Statistical Sciences, University of Alberta, Canada and Prof. Wen-Hsien Sun of Chiu Chang Mathematics Education Foundation, Taiwan were the key speakers/lectures in the seminar. They gave interesting mathematical insights that could enrich strategies in the teaching of math through puzzles. Prof. Sun displayed his best craftsmanship in the use of puzzles that would ensure students to have a lively encounter with mathematics. Dr. Liu, on the other hand, introduced varied motivating approaches and techniques that enhance teachers’ competence to teaching mathematics.

Dr. Simon Chua, MTG President, was gratified at the response of mathematics teachers to the seminar. Dr. Chua stressed, “the way math teachers had responded to attend the seminar MTG sponsored for them is a good indication for the mathematics education in the Philippines.” Furthermore, the teachers showed great satisfaction at how the two math experts run the whole day seminar.
