WHAT THE TRAINEES SAY ABOUT THE 2004 MATHEMATICS OLYMPIAD SUMMER TRAINING PROGRAM

Jun 04, 2004

Dr. Gangson Leng has been able to explain the solutions
to the problems better than any doctoral degree holder who speaks
English well. Dr. Leng wrote down everything to compensate for his
“silence” while other math trainors usually skip important steps when
explaining the solution.

I gained more knowledge and insights during my stay here in
Zamboanga. I would just feel more comfortable if I was sleeping in my
own bed and eating dinner at 7 pm not 4:30 pm.

My first impression regarding the training with Dr. Gangsong Leng
was whether this would be a cool adventure in life or just another
boring days in school. At first I was a little skeptical because of the
language gap, but as we experienced the rigid trainings days with him,
i cam to realize that he’s really a great teacher! He presented
detailed solutions to a most difficult problem i ever encountered and I
understand him well.

I also discovered that through this training we did not only gain
knowledge but also made some friends too. Fourteen days is over, and I
really wanted to last longer (surprisingly true!), but whatever begins
has to end. So thanks for the wonderful time and making my summer
fruitfully.

MTG hired a great scholar from Shanghai, China. He has trained 12
gold medallists. That great scholar and professor is Dr. Gang Song
Leng. He toiled with us 24-7 (24 hours a day, 7 times a week… not 24
hours actually). He will surely turn us to his 13th, 14th, and soon,
and so forth, until his “nth” goldmedalist, when is an element of the
set of positive integers greater than 12 (written as nÎ )

At the end of the training, MTG does not gain from our hardship,
but the trainees. The trainees should be grateful to the many
sacrifices of our beloved of MTG, Dr. Simon Chua, the many different
trainors, and Dr. Gang Song Leng

This Mathematical Summer Olympiad Training Program really helps in
the preparation for international contest; MTG even hired a professor
from China to teach and prepare us for the contests. The first days of
the training seemed too difficult, but I learned a lot of new
Mathematical formulas and Mathematical techniques. Compared to the
training I had last year, this seems to teach me more and seems to be
worthwhile.

Having fun while learning, a professor from China teaching us very
nice and making us laugh without him even noticing it, bonding with
colleagues and of course making new friends. No one will see beauty
unless appreciation is applied. Another value that I’ve learned from
this trip is being responsible. Taking care of one’s self is a very big
responsibility and I’m glad that I managed it good. Being able to
comply with instructions and rules aren’t so bad since they are
interested to make us better. The bottom line is I had a great time.
Also I want to thank God and the people responsible who made me stand
right now. To end my composition. I will leave you a quote from my
professor which be applied to our lives. “Have self confidence and
assurance to solve problems”

My life here in Zamboanga is a bit different compared to my life in
Manila because we, trainees are required to study for 8 hours a day
straight for two weeks. Sometimes, I already feel very pressured and
exhausted but I still believe that it’s worth because I really gain a
lot of knowledge that I could make use of in international
competitions. I also learned tips from Dr. Leng that we should
confidence solving problems and we must not give up until we arrive to
the correct answer. Patience is a must. I have no regrets that I joined
this once a year training held here in Zamboanga. I’m sure I have a lot
share to my colleagues in school. I will always treasure this
unforgettable experience of mine.

I’ve experienced more “new” things than what I usually do or feel.
I’ve met new friends from different school and regions, I’ve
encountered challenging problems. I’ve learned from a new and special
teacher and it was a lot more fun than trouble. I also hope to win
great prizes in competitions so that all the efforts MTG had done for
us wouldn’t be all wasted.

I’ve been in MTG for 5 years now and to tell you frankly, it takes
a lot of determination and perseverance to endure this long. It also
takes a lot of sacrifice only MTG kids understand. Bu tin the end,
everything is worth it. Where do we get our strength? Well, we have the
support of our schools, love from our parents, a very good leader in
the person of Dr. Simon L. Chua, hardworking MTG staffs, and a special
blessing from GOD who makes us enjoy and see the beauty of Math at a
very young age.

This year’s training is special because it is the first time to
have my summer training in Zamboanga City. What makes it even more
special is being trained by Dr. Gangsong Leng, a Chinese professor,
he’s expertise in Math has increased the world’s knowledge about Math
and its wonders. We have learned a lot from him this week and we hope
and pray that this training will bring out the best of us and in the
future competitions, we hope that we will be able to make our country
proud of us.

The training was very intensive. The schedule was tight; we had to
have snacks before bed because the schedule for lunch was very limited.
Our morning class start at 8 a.m and our night classes end at 8:30 p.m,
so we were very tired and we can’t sleep right away from the time we
went to bed, so we can’t get enough sleep from a night’s rest. It was
indeed a very hectic and rigid training I ever experienced in my life
but its worth because for me I learned many things and formulas and
ways to prove equations.

I really enjoyed being an MTG Trainee. Some people may think we are
weird, studying numbers 12 hours a day. Even my schoolmates who see me
coming to school, raise an eyebrow and say “Math again?!” MTG kids are
also human beings, not aliens with extremely large brains. MTG,
officers, staff, trains and trainees included, have always been
misunderstood. In fact, MTG sacrifices a lot for the kids’ sake and for
that I thanks MTG from the very bottom of my heart.

Dr. Gang Song Leng , a Chinese professor who came from middle China
is the professor who will teach us in this special training. He is very
intelligent and we are privileged that he can help us to be better with
field of mathematics. I learned many great things and found difficult
problem to be quite easy to solve because of the techniques and the way
the professor presented the solutions. All I can say is that I’m
thankful to take part of this special training.

Almost all of the things in this world can be of worth and be
brought. But there are something’s money can’t buy. This I have
realized when I came here to train in Zamboanga. The first time I heard
the news that I’ll be sent to the province to study Math. I suddenly
thought of having a nice vacation while studying. Without hesitation I
packed my things and rode the plane, bringing the thought of making my
summer a little bit different from the others. But the first day of my
training made the tide change for me. Having 3 hours in morning,
afternoon and evening made drain not only my brain but my whole body. I
complained to my self and my companions about what’s happening. But
while I was mumbling any grumbling about this, I was did not realize
the beauty and equisiteness of the place and the people around me. I
believe that there should be more training like this because it will
really improve our skills and ability to compete internationally.

One event to be considered is the training with Dr. Gangsong Leng,
one of the best teachers of China. Trained a lot of MTG kids in
Zamboanga. This event is to be considered idealistic because of its
aims, to train the Filipino kids to enhance their skills in the field
of Mathematics.

MTG kids does not only build their IQ, but also build our EQ. I
made many friends with my fellow MTG kids, who I can consider as a new
family. I therefore may considered, that despite the crisis in this
country, MTG shows us that they have a mission to pursue and to
succeed, a vision to make our country proud and honored.

Being a new member of this association really gives you the feeling
of being nervous and it really gives tense. Later on, as time has
passed, you can now feel the enjoyment and that great fun. But some
other times, times become so challenging. You will be competing with
your companions. But still, being a member of the MTG is a great
pleasure and fun! Generally MTG is one of the best Math association in
the country. They keep on going to make their dreams come true, that
is, to make the Philippines the strongest country for the international
competitions at least, Southeast Asia.

Dr. Gangsong Leng, for one is a very intelligent, but also patient
teacher. Despite his inability to speak fluent English, you will
understand what he’s doing I explaining. And of course, we get a huge
amount of knowledge and experience from this training. You will also
meet new friends and improve friendships that you already have. About
the stay in general, Zamboanga is not as disordered and you probably
won’t have to worry when walking outside. Also Dr. Chua and the rest of
the MTG staff spent so much time and money just for us to attend this
training, so I feel absolutely blessed.

So I ask myself, is the training worth the sacrifices? Yes, and I
can assure you that this was a great experience for me. If I were to do
this again I would I feel that I have wasted their effort of arranging
this training if I don’t attends Thank you to every one. God Bless.
Peace.

About our recent training, it’s learning and fun combined. We
oftentimes emulate Dr. Leng especially how he mispronounce words and
even though he has difficulty in English language, he is really
brilliant in Math. He had produced 8 gold medalists in China. I hope I
would be one in the future (SOUNDS IMPOSSIBLE) no wonder MTG had hire
him.

I am really confident to say that I have learned so much since
that professor came. Now I continue to learn and enjoy, with the rest
of the class! We have morning, afternoon and even night classes! We are
used to that! KAMI YATA ANG MTG KIDS!

The place is very secure because of the feeling that you are not
just a student trying to learn but rather a family member helping one
another to learn. Learn not only in Mathematics but also learn things
about life such as value is important. The trainor makes complicated
things and simple. May that’s why he is a real intelligent person.

I want to salute the Mathematics Trainers’ Guild of the
Philippines for doing such a nice Job in improving the standard of
Mathematics in our country. They already sacrifice much work, time,
energy and even money for the country’s student but they are still
willing to give more sacrifice more for everyone of us here. MTG is
really such a great association. They should serve as an inspiration
and role model to others.

Dr. Leng was not really very good in speaking language, but if you
just have heat for Mathematics, you would really find his lessons very
interesting and you would really try to understand all his lessons.

Elvis Chua

ZCHHS

***********************************************************

Dr, Leng is a very kind and patient teacher. Even if he doesn’t
know how to speak very fluent English, ha can write very well and thru
his writings, he lets us understand completely and clearly what he is
talking about and present a very excellent solution to a certain
problem. Everyday, Dr. Leng will discuss an average of 20 problems,
some problems of course I will not understand right away, so during
night time or my vacant period I would try to review them until I will
understand. This training that we are undergoing doesn’t only train out
abilities in mathematics, but of course that is our main purpose, it
teaches us how to be had working during training sessions, punctual,
when going in to school, and self control, when at home studying
instead of watching T.V. or playing.

I believe that this training that we are having now is the best
training that we ever had, not because I’m praising MTG, but because
MTG is trying to improve the mathematics of the Philippines. By
inviting good trainors like Dr. Leng, I believe the student will
improve their skills in mathematics.

I experienced having as teacher, which barely can speak English but
can almost magically solve the most difficult problems. I experienced
having classes from 8:30 a.m. up to 9 in the evening. I experienced
waking up late and getting left by the school service. But above all, I
experienced having fun while learning. MTG taught me that we can have
fun and learn at the same time.

Moreover, MTG taught me to be independent and confident with myself. Because of this, I thank MTG.
