SEVEN MTG MATHCHIEVERS OUTWIT ASIAN CONTENDERS IN HUA BEI SAI

Aug 01, 2008

It’s another homerun for the Filipino kids who went to meet the challenge in the 2nd Hua Luo Geng Mathematics Elites Invitational Competition held in Beijing, China on July 16-20, 2008 which was participated in by no less than 259 math-gifted children from China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Macau, Singapore and the Philippines.

This math competition had been conducted for the second time in honor and acknowledgment to the great contribution of the outstanding Chinese Mathematician, Hua Luogeng (Hua Loo-Keng). He was the founder and pioneer of many fields in new China's mathematics research. He wrote more than 200 theses and monographs, many of which have become classic documents of immortal value. Besides pure mathematics, Hua also did a lot of work in the fields of mathematics applications. He made the mathematics serve the national economy and became the first Chinese scientist who closely combined the mathematics theoretic studies and practical production, and obtained enormous economic results in many fields.

In this year’s competition, the Philippines through the Mathematics Trainers’ Guild, Philippines sent a group of another seven (7) classified A-1 math warriors to confront the equally exceptional “mathchievers” of other countries in the said contest. Despite the tough Asian challengers with one and the same determination to win, the Philippine team managed to get hold of the slots, placing the Pinoy kids in the admired positions.

Hooking the First Honors Award in the elementary level was Jefferson Henry Morco of Chiang Kai Shek College who stood very rewardingly with 11 others while capturing the bronze medals, still in the elementary level, were Sterling Alvin Tiu of St. Stephen’s High School, Kenneth Tan  Co and Harvey Eaton Uy of Xavier School.

The big math champ of St. Jude Catholic School and the only ‘Joan of Arc’ MTG sent to the said contest, Carmela Antoinette Lao, grabbed the Second Honors in the high school level. Arvin Wilson Alba of Philippine Science High School-Main and Matthew Sim Ng of Chiang Kai Shek College did not choose to be left behind but handled the contest so well to score for the Third Honors awards in the high school category.

Dr. Simon L. Chua, MTG president, is leading the growing MTG family in congratulating the winners of the Hua Bei Sai for placing the Philippines in the map of the international math competitions. Dr. Chua said, “This year, we have been very lucky to have a good combination of Filipino math wizards because their chemistry managed to work very well. We really attribute this success to the overwhelming support of the parents and the schools to the giftedness of these children
