3 FILIPINO MATH WIZARDS WIN MEDALS IN CHINA

Jul 30, 2009

It’s another victory for the Philippines as 3 out of 3 of the performing MTG assets wrapped up the 6th China South East Mathematical Olympiad (CSMO) with 1 silver and 2 bronze medals at The Attached Middle School of Jiangxi Normal University, Nanchang, China on July 26-31, 2009. The young Pinoy mathletes with their remarkable math prowess managed to keep the Philippine banner standing to the end in a mental clash with 177 participants from China, Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan, India, Romania.

Though the 3 Filipino participants fought an uphill battle yet their training in school enriched by MTG’s series of intensive trainings put them in a confident position to overcome the challenge of the CSMO. Indeed bagging the medals was never easy for them to solve the mind-boggling math problems in geometry, trigonometry, number theory, and the like. Despite the odds, the 3 Pinoy kids have spared no effort in bringing home silver and bronze.

John Russel Virata of Gideon Academy is this year’s CSMO silver medalist. Standing close to him where Zixin Zhang of Grace Christian College and Zheng Rong Wu of Zamboanga Chong Hua High School who settled for bronze.

The China South East Mathematical Olympiad initiated by Prof. Qiu Zonghu, vice chairman of the China Mathematics Committee, is for the participants who finished 1st year senior high school. John, Zixin and Zheng Rong who are all only in their fourth year handled the competition so well. This only shows that the mathematical knowledge of our participants is higher than the CSMO contest problems themselves. Furthermore, this is the first time for the Philippines to earn silver medal in four years.

Dr. Simon Chua is leading the MTG family in extending his congratulations to the kids, to their parents and school for the job very best done. Dr. Chua said, Satisfaction does not come with achievement, but with effort. Full effort is full victory. And that is what has been manifested by John, Zixin, Zheng Rong and other winners in the international competition”.

Furthermore, the three medalists rushed to fly home on July 30 after the competition dates on July 28 and 29 to attend the University of the Philippines College Admission Test (UPCAT) scheduled on August 1, 2009.

Keep up the good work kids!!!
