The Filipino math wizards had the world at their feet after the smash hit declaring the Philippines an overall champion in the Asia Inter-Cities Teenagers Mathematics Olympiad (AITMO) held on December 26 to 30 in Sentul City, Bogor Province in West Java, Indonesia.
The Philippine team D carried the day by hooking the seemingly elusive overall champion trophy for the country leaving Taiwan and Thailand in the second and third spots respectively. Fulfilling the Philippines’ dream for this grand distinction were Clyde Wesley Ang of Chiang Kai Shek College, Nathanael Joshua Balete of St. Stephen’s High School, Matthew Angelo Isidro and Adrian Reginald Sy of St. Jude Catholic School.
Coming up trumps in the individual contest were the following gold reapers, Ang, Sy and Kelsey Lim Tiong Soon of Grace Christian College who was a member of the International Girls’ Team.
The 17-Filipino number crunchers reaped a total of four champion awards, two first runners-up, and three second runners-up trophies in the team and group contests, and three gold, four silver, and one bronze medals, and eight merit awards in the individual contests.
Accordingly, the AITMO 2013 contest problems were harder than the problems in any previous international math contests participated in by the Philippines. And these latest feats are only facts speaking for themselves.
