It was another feat of strength as four Filipino Math wizards grabbed 1 silver and 3 bronze medals in the recently concluded Raffles Invitation Mathematical Olympiad (RIFO), hosted by the Raffles Institution, Singapore on February 6 to 11, 2012.
Mikaela Uy , 3rd year, of St Jude Catholic School ended up winning silver medal, an award confirming her impressive prowess in numbers. Mikaela, although a winner in several math contests abroad was still armed with much preparation before facing the rigorous math challenge.
Giving our country equal honor were the bronze medalists, Camille Dee, 4th year, of Immaculate conception Academy Greenhills; Brandon Cahn, 4th year of Philippine Cultural College – Caloocan, and Ruselle Guadalupe 4th year of Valenzuela Science High School – Valenzuela.
The Raffles Invitational Mathematical Olympiad is a biennial international mathematics event that provides a platform for discovering, encouraging and challenging Grade 7 – 12 mathematically gifted students to pit their skills in a challenging competition. The event also aims to engage discussions and dialogues among top students from around the world, as well as to promote cooperation among students and educators.
The contest element of the RIMO 2012 took place on Feb 8th and 9th, 2012. On each day of the Contest, the examination started in the morning. The first day of the Contest lasted for four and a half hours and consisted of five problems. Each problem was worth 21 points. The second day of the Contest lasted for three hours and consisted of twenty-five problems. Each problem is worth 3 points.
The RIMO 2012 was participated in by teams from 9 countries/territories such as Australia, China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan and Thailand.
