Only 16 lower junior and 57 upper primary students had made it in the top 5% to 10% of the participants in the Philippines in the first round of the International Mathematics Assessments for Schools (IMAS) conducted in December 2011. These 73 math wizards are now qualified to take the second round IMAS test scheduled to be given on Saturday, February 11, 2012.
For the qualifiers of Metro Manila areas, the IMAS will be conducted at 9 o'clock in the morning Philippine Cultural College, 1253 Abad Santos St., Tondo ,Manila. For other qualifiers, the IMAS will be conducted in their respective training centers.
The 2nd Round of IMAS consists of fifteen problems: Problems 1 to 5 are in multiple choice type where each correct answer will be given 4 points, Problems 6 to 13 call for short answers where each correct answer will be given 5 points. Problems 14 to 15 need detailed solutions and every correct answer gets a full mark of 20 points, partial mark may be given.
In the Philippines as in each of the participating countries such as Malaysia, Brunei, Indonesia, China, Hong Kong, Thailand, Singapore, USA, Canada, Taiwan, Nepal, Sri Lanka, South Korea, South Africa to mention a few, the top 5% percentile participants will be awarded with Gold Medal. Each of the 6% to 15% percentile participants will be awarded with a Silver Medal and each of the 16% to 30% percentile participants will received a Bronze Medal
