Gifted students in mathematics should be identified and nurtured at a young age for them to develop and sustain their interest in the subject. For this reason, the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) and the Department of Education (DepEd) recently signed a Memorandum of Agreement with the Mathematics Trainers’ Guild, Philippines (MTG) in support of the 2005 Philippine Elementary Mathematics International Competition or PEMIC to be held on May 23-28, 2005 at the Bohol Tropics Hotel, Tagbilaran City, Bohol Province. The MOA was signed by DOST Secretary Estrella F. Alabastro, DepEd Secretary Florencio B. Abad and MTG President Simon F. Chua. Other officials present during the ceremonies were DepEd Undersecretary Fe A. Hidalgo, DOST-SEI Director Ester B. Ogena and MTG External Vice President Rechilda P. Villame.
The PEMIC 2005 is an annual international mathematics contest aimed at developing the mathematical talents and skills of primary students. It will be hosted this year by the Philippines. This competition is expected to gather more than forty (40) teams from different cities worldwide.
The Philippine delegation will be selected from a pool of elementary students who are currently undergoing series of trainings with the MTG. The student’s performance in the training will be used as basis in the final selection of candidates for the competition. The Philippines is entitled to send one team for every region.
The MTG is a private organization composed of volunteer Mathematics teachers committed to develop and promote excellence in mathematics education and training in the Philippines. It was organized in 1995 and since then has helped Filipino students shine in international math competitions.
